If you like the hustle and bustle of a big city, then Bangkok is the place to visit. There is definitely a lot going on in this city and there are many people there as well as tourists. With Thailand being a popular destination for travel, most people make their first stop in Bangkok.
The Khao San Road, the backpacker’s mecca of the world, a place where you will find everything from lively parts to street vendors selling souvenirs at very reasonable prices. Of course you get bombarded by the people trying to sell you stuff, but you quickly figure out how to say no and continue walking. On this walk, you’ll find many patios with delicious thai food as well as barbecue. At night, it is still quite lively with bars and clubs to keep you going through the wee hours. Definitely the first spot people go when they visit Bangkok.
But the city isn’t all shopping and partying, rather it is quite cultural. It is not uncommon to see groups of monks casually walking the streets. And about every few hundred metres, you’ll find a spectacular-looking Buddhist temple. These buildings are amazing to look at and very peaceful on the inside. Just make sure you take off your shoes before going in.
Bangkok is quite easy on the wallet by western standards. To give you an idea, you can get a super swanky hotel for less than $50 US per night, or stay in a hostel for as low as $5/night. A meal at a restaurant will run you $3-$5, and if you are more adventurous, the street food is around $1. Don’t be afraid of it, the street food is actually some of the best food in the city. Just make sure you go to one that other people are eating at.
Going around town is quite easy with their metro system. One fun experience is to take a tuk tuk which is basically a scooter with a carriage attached to it. Though it may seem unsafe, it is truly an essential experience to have.
Make sure when you are walking around town, go into with an open mind and a smile on your face. After all, Thailand is the land of smiles.
